Full Biography


Born in Tblisi, Georgia, Nino Surguladze studied at the Tiblisi Georgia Conservatory of Music, taking part in numerous musicals and concerts in Georgia and abroad. She has won prizes in a number of prestigious international voice competitions including the Concours International de Chant de la Ville de Toulose, the Francisco Vinas Competition of Barcelona, and the BBC Singer of the World Competition. Surguladze is also an accomplished actress, having won a special prize at the Geneva Film Festival for her role in the Georgian film Walsi pechoraze.

She made her debut in Parma with Dannatine di Faust (Margherita) with M. Michel Plasson.

In 2001 she joined the Academy Studio of La Scala and since has performed roles in productions of Salome, Boris Godunov, Verdis Oberto Conte di San Bonifacio, L Italiana in Algeri, Donizettis Ugo Conte di Parigi, and has joined Riccardo Muti for the opening of the 2003-04 season in a production of Rossinis Moise et Pharaon. She sang at the 2003 Christmas concert, under the baton of Maestro Muti.

Other appearances have included the role of Meg in Falstaff and a new production of Ariodante in Frankfurt (Polinesso). She received great public acclaim for the roles of Fenena in Nabucco, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte (Genoa), Suzuki in M. Butterfly (Tokyo), Maddalena in Rigoletto (Barcelona), and Idamante in Idomeneo (Milan).

Surguladze performed Gli Stivaletti and E. Onegin in Milan and appeared in a new production of E. Onegin at Covent Garden with P. Jordan. She received wide critical acclaim for her performances of Betrothal in a Monastery at the Glyndebourne Festival and she made her debut with the role of Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito and Idamante in Idomeneo in Hamburg. She sang Damnation de Faust at the Teatro Regio of Parma, Carmen in Bari and in a new production of I racconti di Hoffmann in Hamburg and in Parma with scenes from Faust of Schumann. During the last season, she made her debut in Rome (Santa Cecilia) with Beethovens Ninth Symphony and also performed Dvoraks Requiem in Berlin with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Nicola Luisotti.

She made her American debut in Chicago in Eugene Onegin obtaining big reviews from the public and critics. She sang Ariodante in Frankfurt,Carmen in Bari, Graz, and Neaples.

In the 2007 summer opera festival at the Arena she performed the part of Fenena in Nabucco

Recently she obtained big success in a new production of Vedova allegra at Teatro alla Scala.

An additionally big success with Cosi fan tutte in Valencia singing Dorabella with Barbara Frittoli

Future Engagements include: Carmen in Bologna Barcelona and San Diego, Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte) at Suntory Hall in Tokyo and at Covent Garden and she will be at La Scala again with Faust of Gonoud and Les Contes d Hoffamnn Niklaus (Jacques Offenbach).

Die Mezzosopranistin Nino Surguladze stammt aus Tiflis, wo sie Gesang und Schauspiel studierte. Für den georgischen Film Valsi Pechoraze wurde sie beim Film-Festival in Genf ausgezeichnet. Ebenfalls ausgezeichnet wurde sie als Preisträgerin renommierter Wettbewerbe (»Concours International de Chant de la Ville de Toulose«, »Francisco Viñas« in Barcelona). 2001 kam sie ans Opernstudio der Mailänder Scala, an der sie in Produktionen wie L'Italiana in Algeri, Donizettis Ugo Conte di Parigi, Verdis Oberto Conte di San Bonifacio, Meg Page (Falstaff), Boris Godunow und Salome. Als Dorabella (Così fan tutte) gastierte sie am Teatro Carlo Felice in Genua, als Sextus in Peter Konwitschnys Hamburger Inszenierung von La clemenza di Tito. Hinzu kommen Adalgisa (Norma) am Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Fenena (Nabucco) in der Arena di Verona, Federica (Luisa Miller) und Maddalena (Rigoletto) am Teatro del Liceu Barcelona, Muse / Nicklausse (Les Contes d'Hoffmann) am Teatro Regio Turin und in Hamburg, Olga an der Lyric Opera of Chicago und am Royal Opera House Covent Garden (unter Philippe Jordan), Marguerite (La Damnation de Faust) am Teatro Regio in Parma, schließlich Clara in Sergei Prokofjews Verlobung im Kloster beim Glyndebourne Festival. Als Carmen war sie in Neapel und Bari zu Gast, und als Carmen gab sie – in Stefan Herheims Inszenierung – in der Saison 2006/07 ihr Debut an der Grazer Oper.
